Anna Mani: Five Papers, One Thesis, No Degree

She finished the thesis. Madras refused the degree.

In the library of the Raman Research Institute in Bengaluru there is a bound doctoral dissertation on the luminescence of diamonds. It sits with the others. It looks like the others. Nothing on it records that it never produced a degree for the person who wrote it.

The five papers behind it were single-authored, which in 1945 was rare for anyone and close to unheard of for a woman in an Indian physics laboratory.

Her name was Anna Mani.

Before the laboratory

Anna Modayil Mani was born on 23 August 1918 at Peermade, in the princely state of Travancore, now Kerala. Her father was a civil engineer with cardamom estates and an agnostic. The family was Syrian Christian, prosperous, and conventional about daughters: the sons were groomed for careers, the daughters for marriage. She was the seventh of eight children.

She read instead. By eight she had gone through nearly everything in Malayalam in her public library, and by twelve nearly everything in English. On her eighth birthday she turned down the customary family gift of a set of diamond earrings and asked for a set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

In 1925 the Vaikom Satyagraha was underway in Travancore, a campaign against the barring of Dalits from the road beside a temple. Gandhi came to Vaikom in support. Mani was seven, and the campaign marked her. She never joined a party, but she wore only khadi from then on.

She wanted medicine. It was not available to her, so she took physics, on the practical ground that she was good at it, and read for a bachelor’s degree with honours in physics and chemistry at Presidency College in Madras.

In 1940 the Indian Institute of Science gave her a scholarship to do research in physics. She was accepted into C. V. Raman’s laboratory.

Thirty-two diamonds

Raman’s laboratory was working on diamonds because Raman was in the middle of two arguments: with Max Born over crystal dynamics, and with Kathleen Lonsdale over the structure of diamond. He held a collection of three hundred stones from India and Africa. Nearly everyone in the lab was on some aspect of them.

Mani took thirty-two. She recorded and analysed their fluorescence, their absorption, and their Raman spectra, and worked through the temperature dependence and the polarisation effects.

The physical conditions of that work are worth stating precisely, because they are the reason the output was what it was. The crystals were held at liquid-air temperatures. The luminescence of some of the stones was so faint that recording a single spectrum on a photographic plate took fifteen to twenty hours of exposure. She spent nights in the laboratory waiting on plates.

Between 1942 and 1945 she published five papers on the luminescence of diamond and ruby. Every one of them was hers alone.

In August 1945 she submitted her doctoral dissertation to Madras University and was awarded a government scholarship for an internship in England.

The technicality

Madras University at that time formally granted the degrees for research done at the Indian Institute of Science. It declined to grant hers.

The stated ground was that Anna Mani did not hold an MSc, and therefore could not be given a PhD.

She had graduated with honours in physics and chemistry. She had been admitted to graduate research at the Indian Institute of Science on the strength of that undergraduate degree, by the same system that was now telling her the degree was insufficient. The Institute had accepted the qualification. The University, at the far end of five years of completed work, decided it had not.

The five papers were already in the literature. The research was finished, submitted, and accepted as research. What was withheld was the credential.

Abha Sur, writing in Resonance, the journal of the Indian Academy of Sciences, records where the dissertation ended up. It remains in the library of the Raman Research Institute, indistinguishable from the other bound dissertations, with not a trace to suggest that Anna Mani’s did not result in a degree for her.

That is the specific mechanism, and it is a quiet one. No paper was stolen. No name was removed. The work sits on the shelf in the same binding as work that counted, and the record of the refusal is nowhere on it.

What she said about it

This has to be stated plainly rather than edited out, because it cuts against the framing.

Anna Mani did not regard herself as a victim of this, and said so. She held that the lack of a PhD made little difference to her life. Asked by the World Meteorological Organization decades later about being a woman in the field, she said she had been fortunate not to experience professional discrimination and had felt neither penalised nor privileged for being female. Sur, who knew her work well, records that she made light of the difficulties she met and was disdainful of what she called victim politics.

The archive does not overrule her. She is entitled to her own account of her own life, and she was not a person who required rescuing.

Two things can be true. A woman can decline to be aggrieved, and an institution can still have taken something from her that it had no defensible reason to take. The refusal is a documented act by a named university, and it stands as a fact whether or not the person it was done to chose to carry it.

What she built instead

She went to England on the government scholarship, travelling on a troop ship in 1945 to Imperial College in London. Her preference was to continue in physics. Meteorological instrumentation was the only scholarship on offer, so she took that, and it redirected the rest of her career.

She returned in 1948 to a country that imported nearly all of its scientific instruments, down to thermometers and barometers, and joined the India Meteorological Department at Pune in the instruments division under S. P. Venkiteshwaran. She standardised the drawings for close to a hundred different weather instruments and put them into production. She eventually ran the division, with a hundred and twenty-one men under her, and a working rule that wrong measurements are worse than no measurements. Her instruction to the workshop was to find a better way to do it.

Then she went further out. During the International Geophysical Year of 1957 and 1958 she set up a network of stations to measure solar radiation across India, and later organised year-round wind measurement from more than seven hundred sites. That is the measurement base any serious solar or wind programme has to stand on, and she built it decades before either was fashionable. She began working on ozone in 1960, two decades before the ozone layer became a public matter, and developed an ozonesonde to measure it, which put her on the International Ozone Commission. In 1963, at Vikram Sarabhai’s request, she set up the meteorological observatory and instrumentation tower at the Thumba rocket launching facility. She revised parts of the WMO guide to instruments and observing practice and worked in Egypt as a radiation expert.

She retired as Deputy Director General of the India Meteorological Department in 1976, then published The Handbook for Solar Radiation Data for India in 1980 and Solar Radiation over India in 1981, and later ran a small Bengaluru company making instruments to measure wind speed and solar energy. She was still heading a solar and wind assessment project near the end of her life.

She never married. She had a stroke in 1994 and died in Thiruvananthapuram on 16 August 2001, a week before her eighty-third birthday.

Her advice to anyone entering the field was that we have only one life, that you should first equip yourself for the job, make full use of your talents, and then love and enjoy the work.

One number is given differently across sources and is not resolved here. Sur in Resonance puts the photographic exposure at fifteen to twenty hours; the INSA account puts it at sixteen to twenty. The post uses Sur’s range. The INSA publication also carries a sidebar giving 1913 as her birth year, which contradicts its own opening line and every other source, and is treated as a typographical error.
