Hertha Ayrton: The Fellow the Royal Society Refused

She solved a problem that was lighting the streets of every city in Europe. She wrote the book on it, the first single-authored study of the electric arc. She was put forward for the highest honour in British science, and the Royal Society turned her down on the ground that, being married, she had no legal existence at all.

Her name was Hertha Ayrton.

She explained the electric arc. The Royal Society ruled that a married woman did not exist.

From governess to the arc

She was born Phoebe Sarah Marks on 28 April 1854 in Portsea, Hampshire, the daughter of a Polish Jewish watchmaker who died when she was seven. She went out to work as a governess at sixteen, sending money home. Friends nicknamed her Hertha, and the name stuck. With the backing of the feminist Barbara Bodichon she reached Girton College, Cambridge, and read mathematics. She passed the Tripos in 1880. Cambridge did not award degrees to women, so she took an external degree from the University of London instead.

She came to science through invention, patenting a line-divider in 1884 and, across her life, twenty-six patents in all. That year she began attending evening classes in electricity under Professor William Edward Ayrton, whom she married in 1885 and whose work she then extended well past his own.

The hissing of the arc

Arc lighting ran the public lighting of the late nineteenth century, and it had a fault. The arcs flickered and hissed and burned unevenly. Ayrton took the problem apart and found the cause. The hissing was not, as assumed, the electrode boiling away. It was oxygen reaching the heated carbon and oxidising it, and she worked out the relationship between the arc’s length, its pressure and its voltage in a way no one had.

She published the work in The Electrician in the mid-1890s. In 1899 she read a paper, “The Hissing of the Electric Arc,” before the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the first woman ever to do so, and was elected its first woman member. The next woman would not be admitted to the IEE for another fifty-nine years. In 1902 she gathered the whole investigation into a book, The Electric Arc, which stood for years as the standard treatment of the subject.

The paper she was not allowed to read

In 1901 she had a new paper ready, “The Mechanism of the Electric Arc,” and she asked to present it before the Royal Society. She was refused permission to read it, because she was a woman. Her colleague John Perry read it in her place while she sat and listened.

Then came the sharper refusal. In 1902, on the strength of the book, Perry proposed her for Fellowship of the Royal Society. She was the first woman ever nominated. The Council took legal advice and turned her down, not on the quality of the work, which no one disputed, but on her marriage. Under the English doctrine of coverture a married woman had no separate legal standing. In the words of the Society’s own reasoning, a married woman had no legal existence, and a thing that did not exist could not be a Fellow. An unmarried woman might, in principle, have slipped through. A wife could not.

The Society could have changed the rule. It chose not to. The bar held, and no woman was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society until 1945, forty-three years later.

What the record actually gave her

The honours that came were real, and it is worth being exact about them rather than reaching for a tidier grievance. In 1904 Ayrton became the first woman to read her own paper before the Royal Society, “The Origin and Growth of Ripple Marks,” on the physics of sand ripples under moving water. In 1906 the Society awarded her its Hughes Medal for the arc work and the ripple work together, and she was the first woman to win it for research entirely her own.

So the Society honoured her science and refused her its membership in the same decade. That is the mechanism, and it is institutional rather than personal. Perry championed her. Individual Fellows admired her. The obstacle was a rule about wives that the men in charge preferred to keep rather than admit one woman past it. During the First World War she designed the Ayrton Fan, a hand-worked device to drive poison gas back out of the trenches; the War Office dismissed it, then issued more than a hundred thousand of them to the Western Front. The pattern repeats. The work is used. The standing is withheld.

Her own account of the mechanism

Ayrton understood precisely what she was living inside, because she watched it happen to her friend Marie Curie. When the discovery of radium was publicly attributed to Pierre Curie, Ayrton went to the press to correct the record, and she left behind the sentence that names this entire archive better than any modern framing could.

“Errors are notoriously hard to kill,” she wrote, “but an error that ascribes to a man what was actually the work of a woman has more lives than a cat.”

She died on 26 August 1923, still barred from the Fellowship, having spent her patents and her papers making a legal claim to her own ideas precisely because she knew how easily they would otherwise be reassigned. The cat she described has been hard to kill. She spent a career proving it, and proving it wrong.
