She built the mathematics of elastic surfaces under a man’s name. Her death record called her a property owner.
To submit her first real mathematics, she had to become a man.
She borrowed the name of a former student, M. LeBlanc, and sent her work in under his signature, because a woman’s would be thrown away unread.
Her name was Sophie Germain.
She would become the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences, and one of the most important number theorists of her century. She never held a degree, a post, or a seat. The state that recorded her death did not list her as a mathematician.
Educated by theft
Germain was born in Paris on 1 April 1776 into a prosperous merchant family. She was thirteen when the Revolution broke out, and with the city in chaos she took refuge in her father’s library. There she found the story of Archimedes, killed by a Roman soldier because he would not look up from a geometry problem, and decided that any subject worth dying over was worth her life.
Her parents disagreed. Mathematics was no occupation for a girl. They took away her candles, her fire, and her clothes to keep her out of her books at night. She wrapped herself in blankets and worked anyway, teaching herself Latin and Greek to read Newton and Euler, until one morning they found her asleep at her desk in a room so cold the ink had frozen in the well. They gave up trying to stop her. They never really helped her either. Everything she learned, she took for herself.
M. LeBlanc
In 1794 the École Polytechnique opened in Paris. Germain was exactly the right age to enroll. She could not, because she was a woman. So she obtained the lecture notes secondhand and studied the courses she was barred from attending.
At the end of Joseph-Louis Lagrange’s analysis course, students were invited to submit written observations. Germain sent hers under the name M. LeBlanc, a real former student who had dropped out. Her paper was good enough that Lagrange hunted down its author, and when he found a woman he became her supporter rather than turning away. It was a rare piece of luck. She still had no teacher, no classmates, and no path to the training she wanted, and as an unmarried woman she could not even meet freely with the men who might have taught her.
Years later she began writing to Carl Friedrich Gauss, the greatest number theorist alive, again as M. LeBlanc, again because she feared a woman would be ignored. Gauss praised the letters extravagantly. When the truth came out, he wrote back that a taste for the abstract mysteries of numbers was rare enough in anyone, and that for a woman to break through every barrier and reach the deepest parts of it was something he could scarcely believe. She had earned the century’s finest mathematician as a correspondent under a false name.
The prize and the freeze-out
In 1808 the physicist Ernst Chladni showed Paris his vibrating plates, sprinkled with sand that jumped into strange geometric patterns. The Academy set a prize for anyone who could produce a mathematical theory of elastic surfaces to explain them. Lagrange had said the available mathematics was not up to the task, and almost no one tried.
Germain tried for the better part of a decade. She was the only entrant in 1811, and did not win. She entered again and took an honorable mention in 1813. She entered a third time and, in 1816, won the prize, a gold medal, the first woman ever to win an award from the Academy. Her theory still had gaps in its rigor, and she knew it. But she had opened the problem that others would finish.
That was the trap. As elasticity became a major field, the men with the training and the connections built on her foundation, and closed her out of the subject she had started. Siméon Denis Poisson, her chief rival and, conveniently, one of the judges who awarded her the prize, sent her a cold formal note, avoided any real discussion with her, and ignored her in public. When she submitted further work in 1825, the commission that received it simply did not respond. Her paper sat buried until it was found in a dead man’s files and published in 1880, half a century late.
Germain’s theorem
Her deepest work was in number theory, and it was here she went furthest. She built the first general strategy anyone had devised to attack Fermat’s Last Theorem across whole families of exponents rather than one case at a time. The result now called Germain’s theorem was the most important progress on Fermat’s Last Theorem from the 1730s until 1840.
Modern scholars reading her surviving manuscripts have found she did more than the textbooks gave her. Part of the work long credited to Legendre was hers, and some of her ideas were reinvented, unknowingly, more than a century after her death.
Property owner
Gauss persuaded the University of Göttingen to grant her an honorary doctorate, the degree she had been denied her whole life. She died of breast cancer in Paris on 27 June 1831, before it could be conferred.
When the official came to record her death, he wrote her occupation as rentière, a property holder living on her income. Not a mathematician. The woman who corresponded with Gauss and won the Academy’s prize was filed as a landlord.
The erasure outlived her. When the Eiffel Tower was built, its designers inscribed the names of seventy-two French scientists around it, several of them men who had worked on exactly the elasticity of materials that holds the tower up. Germain’s name is not there. No woman’s is. Her absence is the one people still point to.
There is no single villain in this case. There is a rival who cut her out, an Academy that would not seat her, and a whole order that decided in advance what a woman’s mind was for. She got past all of it under a borrowed name, and it still took the record two centuries to write hers back in.
