Her family forbade a girl an education. She grew China’s first silicon crystal, and the West never learned her name.
At six years old she was told she would not go to school. She would cook, wash, and wait to be married off, like her sisters.
She locked herself in her room and refused to eat until they let her learn to read.
Her name was Lin Lanying.
She won that fight, and every fight after it, and ended as the woman who built the material foundation of China’s semiconductor and space industries. Inside China she is called the mother of semiconductor materials. Outside it, in the standard Western story of the silicon age, she is not there at all.
The girl who went on strike for school
Lin Lanying was born on 7 February 1918 in Putian, in Fujian province, into an old and prosperous family that did not educate its daughters. Some of her sisters were married off as children. Before she was six she was already washing and cooking for the household.
Her mother told her that literacy did not matter for a girl. Lin refused to accept it. She shut herself in her room and would not eat until she was allowed to attend the local primary school, and her mother finally gave way. She had to fight the same battle at every stage, and she won each one the same way, by being impossible to refuse. She topped her classes while doing all the housework, sleeping a few hours a night, a habit that stayed with her for life. When money ran short, she took the scholarships the schools reserved for their highest-ranked students, and she took them every term.
She earned a degree in physics from Fukien Christian University and taught there for years. When the university’s exchange program to study abroad passed her over because she was not a Christian, she found her own way out, winning a scholarship to Dickinson College in the United States, then a doctorate in solid-state physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955.
The crystal
In America she went to work for the Sylvania company, which was struggling to grow monocrystalline silicon, the flawless single crystals that all modern electronics are built on. She found what they were doing wrong and fixed it. She was good, established, and set for a career in the country that was inventing the transistor age.
In 1957 she went home instead. By her biographers’ account, agents from the FBI approached her as she prepared to sail and threatened to withhold a year of her earnings if she would not stay. She left the money and boarded the ship.
China had almost nothing to work with, and export bans kept the equipment she needed out of the country. She built around the gap. In 1957 her institute produced China’s first monocrystalline germanium. In 1958 she grew China’s first monocrystalline silicon, making China the third country in the world to do it. In 1962 she designed the crystal-growing furnace, produced China’s first gallium arsenide, and laid the material groundwork for Chinese microelectronics and optoelectronics. Decades later, past the age of sixty, she pioneered growing gallium arsenide crystals in space, where the absence of gravity yields fewer defects, and was the first in the world to do it.
The decade taken from her
The Cultural Revolution fell across the middle of that career. For ten years, from 1966, scientists were treated as enemies. Lin was barred from her research and confined under watch. By some accounts her father was killed in the violence of those years.
She never got the decade back, and she knew it. Diagnosed with cancer late in life, still trying to finish a semiconductor base in the south of the country, she asked for ten more years, one for each the Cultural Revolution had taken. She did not get them. She died on 4 March 2003.
Honored at home, erased abroad
This is not a story of a woman a named man robbed. Inside China, Lin Lanying was recognized as fully as her country could recognize anyone. She was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, served as a vice president of the country’s main science association, sat in the national legislature, and had a company named after her. The record at home is not silent.
The erasure is at the two ends of her life, and it is real. It begins with a family and a society that would have kept a brilliant girl illiterate, and that she had to starve herself to defeat. And it runs through to the present, in a Western history of the semiconductor that names its American and European fathers and has no room for the woman who grew the first silicon crystal in the largest country on earth. She sits in the same place as the archive’s other non-Western subjects, standard at home, unknown abroad, kept out of the global record not by a single act of theft but by who that record was written for.
She fought her way into a schoolroom at six. The least the rest of the world can do is learn her name.
