Alice Kober: She Built the Key to Linear B

She built the method that would crack a lost language. She died two years before a man used it to finish the job.

For half a century, Linear B was unreadable. An unknown script writing an unknown language, found on clay tablets in Crete, and no one could break it.

One scholar worked out the internal logic that made it breakable, alone, at her dining table, on cards she cut by hand from scrap paper.

Her name was Alice Kober.

Two years after she died, a man used the method she had built to finish the decipherment, and the credit became his. Hers all but disappeared.

The card catalogue in the cigarette boxes

Alice Kober was born in New York on 23 December 1906, the daughter of Hungarian immigrants. She took her degree at Hunter College and a doctorate at Columbia, and from 1930 until her death she taught classics at Brooklyn College, a heavy teaching load at a college with no research money, sharing an office with four other people. On the side, for years, she also transcribed textbooks into braille for the college’s blind students.

The rest of her life went to Linear B. Where other scholars started by guessing what language the script recorded, Kober refused to guess. She insisted the decipherment had to be built up from the internal evidence of the tablets themselves, the frequency of each sign, its position in a word, the signs it appeared beside.

To do that she became a one-woman statistical engine. She filled forty notebooks, and when the Second World War made paper scarce she cut her own index cards from whatever she could find: examination blue-book covers, the backs of old greeting cards, checkout slips quietly taken from the Brooklyn College library. By the end she had hand-cut and annotated 180,000 of them, filed in empty cigarette cartons, a cross-referenced database of a language no one could yet read.

The thing she proved

Between 1945 and 1948 she published three papers that changed the problem. She proved that Linear B recorded an inflected language, one where words change their endings, the way Latin does. Then she went further and found what have been called bridging signs, places where one syllable straddles the root of a word and its changing ending, which let her establish that certain Linear B signs had to share a vowel or a consonant, without yet knowing what any of them sounded like.

Out of that she built a grid: a table that organized the signs by their hidden relationships. It did not read the script. It did something more foundational. It laid bare the structure underneath, the framework any solution would have to fit. It was the key, cut but not yet turned.

Died in 1950. Deciphered in 1952.

Kober fell ill in 1949 and died on 16 May 1950, at 43. The cause was never recorded; her family believed it was cancer. She did not live to finish the work, and she did not live to see it finished.

In 1952 the English architect Michael Ventris cracked Linear B, revealing, to everyone’s shock, that the language was an early form of Greek. He did it by building directly on Kober’s grid and her method. He extended her table, added his own considerable brilliance, and turned the key she had cut.

Ventris is not the villain of this story, and it would be dishonest to make him one. He worked from her published method openly, and his own collaborator John Chadwick later called Kober’s contribution the most valuable work done on the script before the final solution. But the popular story that formed, and that hardened over the decades, was simple and wrong in its emphasis: a lone genius architect cracked an ancient code. The woman who built the method he used, who died two years before the finish, faded to a footnote or vanished from the telling entirely.

The key and the lock

It took until 2013, and a book by Margalit Fox, for Kober’s role to be widely restored. The obituary that ran when she died had quietly predicted it: her careful work, one colleague wrote, would surely be found to have played its part when the decipherment finally came.

That is exactly what happened, and exactly what got left out. Deciphering a lost script is not one heroic leap. It is years of unglamorous, precise, structural work that makes the leap possible, and then the leap. Kober did the first and died. A man did the second and was remembered as the one who did it all.

She cut the key. She just did not live the two years it took someone to turn it.
