Marthe Gautier: The Woman Who Found the Chromosome and Lost the Credit

She counted the chromosomes. He kept the slides.

She built the first human cell culture laboratory in France with borrowed money and her own blood. She used it to find the extra chromosome that causes Down syndrome. A colleague offered to photograph her slides at a better equipped lab.

He kept them. The paper came out with his name first and hers misspelled. Fifty-six years later, a French government ethics committee reviewed the file and found she was right.

Her name was Marthe Gautier.

The lab she paid for herself

She was born on September 10, 1925, in Montenils, in rural France. Farming family. She followed her older sister Paulette to Paris to study medicine, and after Paulette died of tuberculosis, she carried on alone. She placed in the concours for the internat des hôpitaux de Paris, one of a small number of women in the cohort.

She trained as a pediatric cardiologist. Then in 1955 she won a Fulbright fellowship to Harvard, where she spent a year learning something almost nobody in France could do: culturing human cells in vitro.

She returned to Paris in 1956 to a position in Raymond Turpin’s unit at the Hôpital Trousseau. Turpin had a hypothesis he had been sitting on since the 1930s, that the condition then called mongolism was chromosomal in origin. Nobody in his lab could test it. Nobody in France could grow the cells.

Gautier told him she could.

She was given a room. It had a bench and a sink. She borrowed money against her own salary to buy glassware. She made her own coverslips. Lacking calf serum, she drew her own blood and used her own serum in the culture medium. She obtained tissue from surgical scraps.

She got the cultures to grow. She then counted the chromosomes in cells from children with the condition and found forty-seven where there should have been forty-six.

That was May 1958. It is the first identification of a chromosomal cause for a human disorder, and it opened the entire field of medical cytogenetics.

The slides

Gautier’s microscope was old and had no camera. To publish, she needed photomicrographs.

Jérôme Lejeune was a young CNRS researcher attached to the team. He had not built the cultures and had not done the counting. He offered to take the slides to a laboratory better equipped for photography.

She gave them to him.

In August 1958 the photographs confirmed the supernumerary chromosome. The slides did not come back. At the International Congress of Genetics in Montreal that same month, Lejeune presented the finding. He presented it as his.

The paper appeared in the Comptes rendus de l’Académie des sciences in January 1959. Lejeune first. Gautier second, with her name printed as “Marie Gauthier.” Turpin third.

Lejeune became internationally famous on the strength of it. He received the Kennedy Prize in 1962 and was named to a chair at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. He spent the rest of his life as the public face of the discovery, and later as a prominent anti-abortion campaigner who invoked it constantly.

Gautier abandoned trisomy 21 entirely and went back to caring for children with heart disease. She was not given a research position in genetics.

What the committee found

She stayed quiet for decades. She spoke on the record in 2009, in a detailed account in the journal Médecine/Sciences.

In 2014 the French Federation of Human Genetics scheduled her to receive an award and deliver a lecture at its congress in Bordeaux. She was eighty-eight.

The Jérôme Lejeune Foundation obtained a court order permitting bailiffs to attend and film her talk, on the stated grounds of preserving evidence for a potential defamation action. The organizers cancelled the in-person lecture. An eighty-eight-year-old woman was prevented from describing her own laboratory work by process servers with a camera.

That is what finally forced the matter into the open. Biologists complained. INSERM, the French national institute for health and medical research, referred the dispute to its ethics committee.

The committee reported in September 2014. It confirmed Gautier’s account. It found that Lejeune’s principal contribution had been promoting the discovery internationally, and that he had not played a substantial role in conceiving the project, carrying out the protocol, or collecting the results. It stated that the discovery could not have been made without the essential contributions of Gautier and Turpin, and that the failure to associate their names with it was regrettable.

She was made an Officer of the Légion d’honneur that same year. She died on April 30, 2022, at ninety-six.

The mechanism, stated plainly

This is not a case of a woman whose contribution was quietly diminished over time. Every step is documented and every step was deliberate.

She built the technical capacity that made the experiment possible. She performed the observation. She physically handed over the material evidence because she lacked equipment her institution had not given her. It was presented abroad, without her, as another person’s work. Her name was misspelled in the record on first publication, which is the single most effective way to sever a researcher from a citation trail.

The equipment gap is the part that gets skipped. She could not photograph her own slides. That is not a personal failing. It is what happens when an institution lets someone build a laboratory out of borrowed glassware and their own blood, then declines to buy a camera.

The credit followed the person with access.

What is still contested

The Lejeune Foundation continues to dispute Gautier’s account and maintains that Lejeune conceived and led the work. That position exists, it is well funded, and it should be named rather than ignored. It is also contradicted by the only independent institutional review ever conducted, which examined the file and found for her.

She grew the cells. She counted the chromosomess. She got second billing under a name that was not hers.
