Nettie Stevens: The Y Chromosome and the Obituary

She found the Y chromosome. Her advisor wrote that she lacked vision.

In October 1912, five months after Nettie Stevens died of breast cancer, the journal Science published a three-page assessment of her work. It was written by the man who had supervised her doctorate, championed her funding, and collaborated with her for a decade.

He praised her precision. Then he explained what she was not.

Her name was Nettie Stevens.

The discovery

Stevens came to research late and on her own money. She taught high school and worked as a librarian for more than a decade, saving until she could enroll at Stanford at thirty-five. She finished a bachelor’s and a master’s there, then went east to Bryn Mawr for a doctorate, which she completed in 1903 at forty-two.

In 1905 the Carnegie Institution of Washington published part one of her Studies in Spermatogenesis. Buried in it is one of the foundational results in modern biology.

Working with the mealworm Tenebrio molitor, Stevens counted chromosomes. Female body cells held twenty large chromosomes. Male body cells held nineteen large ones and one small one. Sperm came in two classes: ten large, or nine large and one small.

She drew the conclusion. An egg fertilized by the sperm carrying the small chromosome becomes male. An egg fertilized by the sperm carrying the large one becomes female. Sex was not set by food or temperature or the condition of the egg. It was carried in a specific chromosome, and it followed Mendel’s laws.

She labeled the pair l and s, for large and small. The field would later rename them X and Y.

What Wilson did, and what he did not do

The record here has been distorted in both directions, and the archive does not improve a case by overstating it.

Edmund Beecher Wilson of Columbia published his own study on chromosomes in Hemiptera in 1905, a few months before Stevens. He found unequal chromosome pairs in males and called the smaller one an idiochromosome. His paper was already at the press when he learned of her results.

He added a footnote. In it he credited her by name, thanked her for permission to cite unpublished work, and stated her finding plainly: that the small chromosome appears in the somatic cells of the male only. It is a generous footnote. Wilson did not take her work.

What he did was hedge. Wilson kept environmental sex determination alive as an alternative, and proposed that the chromosomes might merely transmit sex characters rather than decide sex. Stevens recorded his hedging in her own 1906 volume. She had gone further than he had, and she knew it.

Popular accounts now say Wilson stole the credit, or that he quietly scrubbed his paper after reading hers. Neither claim survives contact with the 2022 review in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, which reads both papers side by side. Wilson and Stevens arrived independently. Stevens was the first to show concretely that the Y chromosome is involved.

The erasure was not committed by Wilson. It came later, and from closer in.

The obituary

Thomas Hunt Morgan was her doctoral advisor. He wrote her reference for the Carnegie fellowship. He collaborated with her on aphids. He was five years younger than she was, and in 1933 he took the Nobel Prize for the chromosome theory of heredity.

His obituary for her ran in Science on 11 October 1912 under the title “The Scientific Work of Miss N. M. Stevens.”

He credited Bryn Mawr’s “liberality” for creating a research professorship for her. He wrote that she was “among the first to establish the correctness” of McClung’s earlier hypothesis, which recasts a discovery as a confirmation of someone else’s idea.

Then came the sentence that fixed her rank for the next sixty-six years:

“Empirically productive, philosophically she was careful to a degree that makes her work appear at times wanting in that sort of inspiration that utilizes the plain fact of discovery for wider vision. She was a trained expert in the modern sense.”

A trained expert. Precise, patient, well balanced, and short on vision.

The charge does not hold. Morgan had been slower than Stevens to accept sex chromosomes at all, and only came around about two years before he wrote those words. Stevens had gone straight to the Mendelian conclusion in 1905 and then spent six years testing it across fifty species of beetle and nine of fly. She was the first to identify the heterochromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster, the animal on which Morgan built his own career and his prize.

She also knew exactly where her evidence stopped. In 1908 she wrote that the question could only be settled by breeding experiments. She was right. It was settled by Morgan’s white-eye work in Drosophila, after she was dead.

Caution about the limits of your own data is not a failure of vision. It is the job.

The record after her

The label propagated fast. In 1916, Calvin Bridges published the first paper in the first issue of GENETICS, proving that genes lie on chromosomes. He thanked “Dr. T. H. Morgan,” “Dr. A. H. Sturtevant,” and “Dr. H. J. Muller.” He cited the pioneering observations of “Miss Stevens.”

All four held doctorates from the same department.

Stevens published at least thirty-eight papers in eleven working years. In 1910 she was one of eighteen women starred in American Men of Science as a leading scientist in the country. The man who compiled that list, James McKeen Cattell, looked at the eighteen and wrote that it was “difficult to avoid the conclusion that there is an innate sexual disqualification.”

Bryn Mawr offered her a research professorship in 1912. She died before she could take it up, at fifty. Morgan called that offer liberality. It arrived after nine years of work and a diagnosis.

Her microscope stayed at Bryn Mawr, reserved for advanced graduate students, who called it the Nettie Maria.

The rehabilitation did not begin until 1978, when the historian Stephen Brush published a reassessment in Isis. Sixty-six years after the obituary.

Every genetics textbook that lists the discovery of sex chromosomes under Wilson’s name alone is repeating a verdict, not a finding. The verdict was written by her supervisor, in a eulogy, about a woman who could no longer answer it.
