She discovered element 87. A man read the announcement out loud.
On 9 January 1939, a note was read to the French Académie des Sciences under the title “On an element 87, derived from actinium.”
The physicist Jean Baptiste Perrin read it. He had not done the work. The woman who had done the work was in the room’s institutional shadow, because she held no university degree and therefore could not address the Académie herself.
Her name was Marguerite Perey.
The technician
Perey wanted to be a doctor. Her father died and the money went with him, so she went instead to the École d’enseignement technique féminine, a vocational school for women, and took a chemistry diploma in 1929. It was not a degree. It qualified her to hold a pipette for somebody else.
At nineteen she interviewed at the Radium Institute in Paris and was hired as personal assistant to Marie Curie.
Her assignment was actinium. Uranium ore contains roughly 0.2 milligrams of actinium per tonne, and separating it out is a long chain of chemical operations with almost nothing at the end of it. Perey did this work for a decade. Curie died in 1934, five years in, and André-Louis Debierne kept Perey on the same task, because he wanted actinium’s half-life pinned down and she had become the best in the world at producing it clean.
That is the part usually told as devotion. It is better understood as containment. She spent ten years supplying other people’s experiments.
What she noticed
In 1935 she read a paper by American researchers reporting beta particles coming off actinium, and did not believe it. The energies were wrong. She reasoned that actinium was decaying into a daughter element and that the radiation belonged to the daughter, not the parent.
Testing it required actinium purer than anyone else could make, measured faster than anyone else could measure. She had spent ten years acquiring exactly those two skills.
She needed permission to stop supplying and start investigating. She went to André-Louis Debierne, director of the Institut and the man who had discovered actinium in 1899, and asked for three weeks. She offered to drop the idea entirely if she had nothing by the end of it.
He refused outright. He then relented, and told her, in her own account, that the idea was stupid and would end in failure.
She had proof in fifteen days.
In late 1938 she detected alpha radiation in a freshly purified sample. Alpha decay strips two protons. Actinium is element 89. Two protons down is element 87, the last empty seat in Mendeleev’s alkali metal column, predicted for seventy years and never found.
She confirmed it by chemistry, co-precipitating the new element with cesium as the perchlorate, which is what an alkali metal below cesium would do. On 7 January 1939 she established the result.
As discoverer she had the right to name it. She chose francium.
It was the last element found in nature. Everything discovered since has been made.
The rule
Two days later Perrin read her note to the Académie.
The rule that silenced her was not aimed at her personally, and this is the shape institutional suppression usually takes. A person without a university degree could not present to the Académie. Perey did not have one because the school her family could afford did not grant one. The credential gate and the money gate were the same gate.
A French children’s comic serialized her life in 1961 and put the objection in the mouths of three professors: a technician without a diploma discovered what we have been seeking for ten years, and she does not even hold the baccalauréat.
The comic meant it as a triumph. It is also an accurate transcript of the problem.
Then Perrin went further than reading her paper. Two months later a Paris weekly reported the discovery correctly, and Perrin wrote in to demand a second article. Element 87, he said, had already been found in his own laboratory three years earlier by Horia Hulubei, who had named it moldavium and claimed it was stable. Perey’s element, Perrin wrote, was fugitive, and probably just an isotope of Hulubei’s.
Moldavium did not exist. Hulubei’s spectral lines were an artifact. Perrin was defending his own laboratory’s false claim against a correct one made by a technician, in print, three months after standing up and reading her name to the Académie.
Discovering an element is ordinarily doctorate-grade work. Perey could not be awarded one for it. She did not hold the baccalauréat, the school-leaving certificate required simply to enroll at a university. She sat the preparatory course for medical studies to obtain an equivalent, then took three more certificates between 1942 and 1945. She defended her thesis, L’élément 87: Actinium K, on 21 March 1946, seven years after adding a square to the periodic table.
Her mother attended the defense. She had never believed the discovery, and had come expecting her daughter to fail.
The Académie, twenty-three years later
In 1949 the University of Strasbourg created a Chair of Nuclear Chemistry specifically for her. She built the radiochemistry program there and directed the Laboratory of Nuclear Chemistry from 1958.
She was nominated for the Nobel Prize five times. She never received it.
On 12 March 1962 the Académie des Sciences elected her, forty-eight votes of sixty-one, to the seat left vacant by Emile Henriot. Founded in 1666, the Académie had admitted no woman in 296 years. It had rejected Marie Curie by two votes in favor of Edouard Branly. It never admitted Irène Joliot-Curie at all, Nobel Prize and all.
The headlines said first woman academician. The headlines were wrong on the detail that mattered.
Perey was elected a corresponding member. Corresponding members hold no seat. They carry none of the prerogatives of full members. They are not entitled to the title académicien and they do not wear the costume. The press spent weeks speculating about what a woman academician would wear to ceremonies she was not entitled to attend in that capacity.
No woman held an actual seat at the Académie until 1979, when Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat was made a full member, seventeen years after Perey.
Erased by the way she was celebrated
Then the coverage arrived, and it did something stranger than ignoring her.
French newspapers and magazines ran her as a martyr. They printed that she had undergone twelve operations, that both arms were sixty percent paralyzed, that she had lost two fingers, that her thumb was amputated, that she had discovered artificial radioactivity with the Joliot-Curies, that she submitted a thesis in 1935, that she worked with Marie Curie for twenty years. Her surname was printed as Pérey, Perrey, Perret, Perez.
Every one of those claims is false. Adloff and Kauffman, working from her own archive, went through them line by line. She lost one phalanx. Her collaboration with Curie lasted three to four years. She was winding down her laboratory work from the early 1950s and had ceased it by the end of the decade.
The radiation damage was real and it killed her. She had hoped francium would prove useful in diagnosing cancer. Francium is carcinogenic. She died of bone cancer on 13 May 1975, at sixty-five, having campaigned in her last working years for radiation safety standards that did not exist when she was nineteen and holding actinium.
But note what the coverage did to the science. Adloff and Kauffman put it flatly: among all these stories, the discovery of francium itself had nearly been lost.
She was made famous as a body that had been damaged, and in the process she stopped being the chemist who found the last natural element.
In January 2026 the Mayor of Paris announced a proposal to add seventy-two women scientists to the Eiffel Tower, alongside the seventy-two men whose names have been on it since 1889. Perey is on the list.
Ninety-seven years after she was not allowed to read her own paper out loud.
