The virus carries her name. She spent twenty years teaching high school.
Say the name out loud in any hospital on earth and every clinician in the room knows what you mean. It is one of the most spoken proper nouns in medicine. The great majority of adults alive are carrying the thing it refers to.
Half of that name belongs to a woman who could not get a laboratory job.
Her name was Yvonne Barr.
What she was hired to do
Barr was born in Carlow, Ireland, in 1932, took honours in zoology at Trinity College Dublin in 1953, and spent the next decade building one specific and unglamorous skill. At the National Institute for Medical Research in London she mastered cell culture, keeping living cells alive outside a body, and used it on the bacterium that causes leprosy. At the University of Toronto she worked on canine distemper.
In 1963 the pathologist Anthony Epstein hired her as his first research assistant at the Bland-Sutton Institute of Pathology, Middlesex Hospital, on a forty-five thousand dollar grant from the American National Institutes of Health. She also became his doctoral student.
Epstein was chasing something specific. In March 1961 he had sat in an audience at Middlesex and listened to the surgeon Denis Burkitt describe a childhood cancer in tropical Africa whose distribution followed rainfall and temperature. Epstein heard a climate-dependent vector and thought: virus. He had tumour samples flown in from Kampala for two years and got nowhere.
He got nowhere because he could not grow the cells. Gregory Morgan’s history of tumour virology records that Epstein was struggling with cell propagation. Barr’s assessment, given later to the Irish Times, was blunter. Epstein was throwing out the good cells.
That is the whole discovery in one sentence. He was discarding what he was looking for.
December 1963
On Friday 5 December 1963 a flight from Uganda was diverted to Manchester by fog. The tumour sample it carried, taken from the upper jaw of a nine-year-old girl in Kampala, sat in transit far longer than intended.
When it reached London the transport fluid was cloudy. It was cloudy because the extra hours of shaking had knocked enormous numbers of living lymphoma cells loose and left them floating free.
Barr put them into suspension culture. They grew, and kept growing, and became a continuous cell line. It was the first time cells of the human lymphocytic series had ever been grown in vitro.
The line was labeled EB, to distinguish it from HeLa and the other cultures on the bench. It is a shelf label. E for Epstein, B for Barr.
With enough cells finally available, Bert Achong put them under the electron microscope and found herpes-like particles. The team published in The Lancet in 1964. It was the first human tumour virus ever identified, and the finding that a virus can cause cancer in people.
Four years later Gertrude and Werner Henle, working in Philadelphia, named the agent for the culture it came out of. EB virus. Epstein-Barr.
Her name did not enter medicine as a tribute. It entered as an abbreviation for a jar.
How the sentence gets written
Nobody stole Yvonne Barr’s credit. She is on the 1964 Lancet paper, second and third author across the series, and she is in the name of the virus. This archive does not manufacture a theft where the record does not show one.
What the record shows is subtler and more common. It shows the sentence.
Writing in the British Journal of Haematology in 2012, Epstein described the moment of publication this way: the discovery was sent for publication “with my research assistants, Bert Achong, who helped with the electron microscopy, and Yvonne Barr, who helped with the cell culture.”
Helped with the cell culture.
The cell culture was the obstacle. It was the thing that had stopped the project dead for two years. It was the reason the December sample turned into a discovery instead of another failure. Barr did not help with it. She did it, and she was hired because she could.
This is how a contribution gets demoted without anyone lying. Change the verb. The work stays in the sentence and the authorship stays intact, and the person quietly becomes a pair of hands.
After
Barr finished her doctorate at the University of London in 1966. She married an Australian industrial chemist the year before, and in 1966 they moved to Melbourne.
She could not obtain a research position there.
She took a Diploma of Education and taught biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics in Melbourne secondary schools for twenty years. She raised two children. She died in Melbourne on 13 February 2016, at eighty-three.
Anthony Epstein was knighted, elected to the Royal Society, and died in 2024 at a hundred and two. Bert Achong, whose electron microscopy produced the image, is not in the name of the virus at all.
The New York Times published Barr’s obituary in March 2024 in its Overlooked series, eight years after she died and sixty years after the paper.
She was alive for the fiftieth anniversary conference at Oxford in 2014. She did not attend. She sent a video greeting.
There is a particular kind of erasure that leaves the name in place. Her name is said thousands of times a day, in clinics, in lecture halls, on lab reports, by people who have never once wondered whether the B stood for a person. It stood for a woman who was told, in effect, that what she had done was help.
